Racial Formations: Reflection and Analysis
I am, without a doubt, completely uncomfortable discussing race. In fact, it is among my least favorite things to do. I mostly feel as if I do not know how to discuss race without offending someone, using the wrong word, revealing my ignorance about many issues within the topic, changing my mind about a certain belief midstream, or just generally looking like a fool. I avoid these discussions at all costs because they put me in a place I am rarely ready to be. So, naturally, this reading struck a chord with me before it actually even began. I related instantly and wholeheartedly to the question raised in the introduction: ââ¬Å"If race is not ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ in a scientific sense, why can I look around my classroom or campus and see that someone is black or Asian or white? â⬠This quandary has plagued me for years. It seemed to me that race had to be more than a social construction established centuries ago. It had never really made sense to me, and this question established a personal connection for me to Omi and Winantââ¬â¢s subsequent explanation of this perplexing notion. The authorsââ¬â¢ explanation of the history of race consciousness certainly helped me in my quest for answers and gave me a much clearer understanding of the origins of race consciousness. I could imagine the European settlersââ¬â¢ surprise upon discovering theirs was not the only existing race, thus challenging essentially every religious belief they held about creation. They could not explain this difference, and, as human beings devout in their religion, that was unacceptable. They needed explanation, and they needed to find it in the Bible. It is not difficult to relate to the anxiety and uncertainty they experienced. People of all religions seem to spend much of their practice justifying what happens in their lives ââ¬â both good and bad ââ¬â within their particular religious texts. We take scripture, verses, lines, chapter, and so on and make it fit into what makes sense for us or, in many cases, make it work to our advantage so that we can cope with what we do not understand or agree with. Having established how race consciousness came to be in the first place, Omi nd Winant address how race became a social concept, the issue at the heart of my original conundrum. As I read about hypodescent and beliefs about racial intermixture, I started to understand. The authorsââ¬â¢ use of Marvin Harrisââ¬â¢ work further established this understanding, particularly Harrisââ¬â¢ statement, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ The rule of hypodescent is, therefore, an invention, which we in the United States have made in order to keep b iological facts from intruding into our collective racist fantasiesâ⬠(11). That was it. This eighteenth-century way of thinking was a continuance of the European settlersââ¬â¢ need to justify certain behaviors. They may not have been using the Bible to do so, but the creators of hypodescent were merely creating a belief to help them get through the social structure they had established and accepted. Now that I have a much better understanding of race as nothing more than a social construct, I suppose my issue is not entirely with those European settlers and not with inventors of outlandish notions about ââ¬Å"Negro bloodâ⬠but rather with current society. We are now at a point that we should know better. We should know that no one race is superior. We should know that ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠is hardly ââ¬Å"pureâ⬠and certainly does not equal ââ¬Å"betterâ⬠simply because it is ââ¬Å"white. â⬠We have more than enough information to move beyond these ways of thinking and into a new era in which we are able to, as Omi and Winant state at the end of the writing, ââ¬Å"break with these habits of thoughtâ⬠(15).

O'Neil emphasis attitude Is not only the most Important element In one's social well being, but also the key to be successful In working environments. The passage shows different forms of daily interacting approaches in order for readers to better acknowledge how attitude can be transform into a person's life. People can perceive one's attitude through the words out of a pen, conversation out f a phone call and most importantly, from one's intention out of their motions. On the other hand, the author showed two examples of how one's attitude can differ from influencing the surroundings according to varying situations. The first example is about attitude in the work place. The author point out that one's will to generate positive attitude and also have the ability to retain the positive attitude while working with people, Is the most significant factor of Indicating one's prosperity and the most that other appreciate to working with. Hence, a worker that unable to show positive attitud e will always have significantly as less opportunity to perform as a worker who are always friendly and approachable for help. The second example Is also related to the attitude in the work place, but this is about how one's determination to feel and adapt the surrounding of the working environment. When one perceives the working environment is not ideal or favorable, he tends to perform much worse than a worker who enjoys everything he contact with in the work place. Therefore, the author advice one should always put effort into what is difficult to accomplish, other than wasting time in complaining what is bad and bothering. Moreover, it Is essential to consider the attitude of oneself before action, especially in the work place. It is because attitude Is an Indicator of whether a person fits a position. For example If a worker performs very well at work, but he shows bad manner and unwilling to communicate with his colleges, and such negative attitude have surrounded the team and u ltimately ruined the whole operation of a task. In his example, the blame and responsibility will always go to the worker, not for the reason of his performance, but his poor attitude to work as a team.Besides the two examples, the author has generally described the importance of attitude in personal aspect. The author state that attitude is easier to be perceive with one's body and facial utterance in a conversation, it is because people sometime talks with the tongue in the cheek, but their facial utterances are harder to show overtones and connotations. Therefore, if one perceived negative attitude from a person through his odd language, one will no longer have the will to maintain the conversation due to the negative attitude had already deteriorate the content of such conversation. In addition, the author reminds readers that one should always preserve positive attitude from being distorted, It Is because a deteriorated attitude can affect one's emotion and turns Into negative a ttitude. If such unpleasant mood has spread to the people in the surrounding, one's social life and career will go bad in no time. To should do self-evaluation as frequent as possible, like one should evaluate oneself as en reminds oneself to drink eight glasses of water per day.To conclude, a person should not only show and keep positive attitude in the working environment, but also treat other with honesty, not to expose your negative attitude through the word is important, while avoid negative body and facial gestures are as eloquent as one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. Moreover, one should focus on resolving problems other than blaming people for their mistakes, because negative attitude will not union the group, but only tear it into pieces.

How the media negatively effects women's body image Essay
How the media negatively effects women's body image - Essay Example In movies, particularly, but also in television shows and the accompanying commercials, womens and girls appearance is frequently commented on: 58 percent of female characters in movies had comments made about their looks, as did 28 percent in television shows and 26 percent of the female models in the accompanying commercialsâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Mediaââ¬â¢s Effect onâ⬠). The definition of a beautiful woman has undergone a radical transformation over the last few decades, and no factorââ¬â¢s role is as dominating in causing this effect than media. The trend of a skinny woman being defined as beautiful started around the mid-20th century. It would not be wrong to state that the new definition of beauty is just as old as the television itself. Hollywood has played a pivotal role in bringing a transformation in the definition of a beautiful woman. By offering roles to skinny and beautiful actresses from as early as the later half of the 20th century in movies, television and media has been slowly but progressively reincarnating the image of a beautiful woman. Today, the transformation has completed and its biggest victims are ordinary women. When women look at the skinny actresses and models at the cover pages of their famous magazines and in the soaps, even the most beautiful women who are naturally beautiful according to all reasonable and right standards find themselves losing to the beauty of these cover girls. Women are trying a range of techniques and strategies in an attempt to meet the standards of beauty in the contemporary age. From changing diet plans, adopting an intense exercise regime, to undergoing liposuction surgery to get that supposedly extra fat sucked out, women are doing it all. ââ¬Å"The mindset that a person can never be "too rich or too thin" is all too prevalent in society, and it makes it difficult for females to achieve any level of contentment with their physical appearanceâ⬠(Serdar). All of this comes at a great cost. Some women have to pay a lot of

Walt Disney World.Demand For Euro Disney Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Walt Disney World.Demand For Euro Disney - Essay Example Unfortunately, there are no pictures here of the parks' buildings or landscape due to the fact that the Walt Disney Company has copyrighted many of the buildings and structures, so that even a tourist guide like The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (Sehlinger, 1994) contains no photographs. In his discussion of the Disney parks, Sorkin turns these restrictions into parody by printing a photograph of the sky above Disney World to which the following inscription is added: This is the sky above Disney World, which here substitutes for an image of the place itself. Disney World is the first copyrighted urban environment in history, a Forbidden City for postmodernity. Renowned for its litigiousness, the Walt Disney Company will permit no photograph of its property without prior approval of its use. Is there a better illustration of the contraction of the space of freedom represented by places like Disney World than the innocent sky (Sorkin, 1992:207) All the Disney theme parks are united by a common approach which distinguishes them from conventional amusement parks. The share prospectus for Euro Disneyland provides a good account of their thinking and this forms a useful backcloth to the discussion that follows: Rather than presenting a random collection of roller coasters, merry-go-rounds and Ferris wheels in a carnival atmosphere, these parks are divided into distinct areas called 'lands' in which a selected theme (such as exotic adventures, childhood fairy tales or the frontier life of the nineteenth century American West) is presented through architecture, landscaping, costuming, music, live entertainment, attractions, merchandise and food and beverage. Within a particular land, intrusions and distractions from the theme are minimized so that the visitor becomes immersed in its atmosphere.... Restaurants and retail stores at Disney theme parks are designed to entertain guests and support the theme. Disneyland Disneyland is situated outside Anaheim, a town to the south of Los Angeles. It is built on a 160-acre orange grove which Walt bought following a feasibility study by the Stanford Research Institute which had been hired to find a suitable site. It is said that Walt's original notion was for a small playground across the road from the studio, but as the vision grew this idea was eliminated. Schickel (1986) notes that Walt sent some of his staff to examine ideas which could be seen at existing amusement parks and to find manufacturers. Apparently, these informants felt that his idea of having a park without a roller coaster or a Ferris wheel or barkers was absurd. Nor were they impressed with his notions of not having outdoor hot dog stands or the sale of beer (he disliked the smells they created). But the exclusion of these symbols of the amusement fair may have been a deliberate strategy of product differentiation, whereby he could establish the distinctiveness of his enterprise and i ts market niche. Roller coasters were added in later years as visitors made it clear that they wanted more exciting fare, but the heavy theming of these rides disassociates them from traditional roller coaster rides. Disneyland opened on 17 July 1955 at a cost of $17 million. One problem with describing a park which has been in existence for 40 years is that it has changed greatly over the intervening period. Many of these changes are summarized in Bright (1987). When it opened there were 26

Compression Test on a Piper Aircraft Lycoming Engine Research Paper
Compression Test on a Piper Aircraft Lycoming Engine - Research Paper Example When doing this correction, the propeller should be rotated to make sure that the piston does not lie at the Top Dead Centre (TDC) so that the valve does not strike the top of the piston in the engine. The engine should be rotated to ensure reseat of valves in a correct manner before a compression recheck is done.Ã The top spark plug from each cylinder is removed before the compression check is performed. This is done by connecting the pressure regulator and the adapter to cylinder number two and the propeller is turned on to ensure that the piston was at TDC on the compression stroke of the engine. The pressure gauge was set at 20 psi following AC 43.13 recommendations to make sure that we achieve the TDC.The gauge was turned to 80 psi following the manufacturers and the AC 43.13 recommendations. The first gauge reading was 80 psi and the air gauge reading was 76 psi. The prop was moved back and forth to ensure proper placement during double checking on the readings obtained.Howeve r, leakages occurring after recheck compel for correction of pressure readings obtained. This correction can be done by placing a fiber drift on the engine rocker arm located directly over the valve stem and the drift is tapped several times using a hammer in orde to remove any foreign materials between seat and valve face. Pressure losses exceeding 25% of the applied pressure is an indication of cylinder defection, but this is subject to operating the engine for a time period of at least three munities to enable.

Find your own topic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Find your own topic - Essay Example Some of these responses include the company giving no response to the situation in the hope that it dies down by itself. The corporate can also deny about the knowledge of such a crisis happening. However, this can have severe consequences on the image of the company and the best way to tackle this is to attend to the situation. The firm can be civil and offer an excuse for the crisis occurring as a small mistake that will be rectified in due time. The acknowledgement of the crisis being there by the firm and consenting to be the root cause of the crisis but offering an argument that the severity of the crisis is small compared to how it has been portrayed is another response that the corporate can give. The firm may also agree to the severity of the crisis and accept responsibility. These are the various ways through which a company will respond, and are believed to be the most effective in such a situation. Only few circumstances test a companyââ¬â¢s image in the eyes of the public or its competency than crisis. The implications of this crisis are severe and can lead to the fall of a corporate and business. Some of these may be that customers will cancel any orders that they may have made.
